A GATHERING FOR LAKSHMI (a novel in progress)
One year after the matriarch Lakhsmi Kaushik dies, her two grown children from America, and her nephew, her husband’s niece and a friend, along with their families gather in Jodhpur, India, for her death anniversary rites. These five viewpoint characters remember their experiences with Lakhsmi and her husband,Ram. The novel describes familial love and misunderstandings, old traditions and changing circumstances, and experiences of young immigrants and challenges of their elderly parents. Spanning five decades the story of Indian traditions such as arranged marriages, dowry, and a widow’s access to her husband’s estate is woven with historical events–World War II, Indian Independence Movement, India-China War, India Pakistan War, and the Gulf War.
